Project Name: RDevelopment and Implementation of a Social and Environmental Management System (SEMS)

Objective: Support the bank in development and implementation of a Social and Environmental Management System in line with the distinct nature of BPC’s operations and in compliance with AfDB’s environmental and social requirements, specifically the newly approved Integrated Safeguard Systems.
Activities: General sensitization about environmental and social management and responsible banking, among staff of different departments within the bank; design and delivery of training for bank staff with responsibility directly related with the SEMS; development of a SEMS framework; redesign of credit processes to incorporate E&S aspects and testing of SEMS through pilots.

Objective: Implement the technical assistance component of AFD’s programme to extend distribution of electricity and clean water in rural areas through small enterprises.
Activities: Developed communication tools and a marketing campaign to increase awareness of the credit facility; enhanced the bank’s capacity to analyze projects and underwrite loans to small electricity and water operators; developed a strategy for Environmental and Social Risk Management; strengthened credit risk practices and anti-money laundering procedures at the bank.
Results: In the first five months, set up the technical assistance framework, recommended underwriting procedures, and got six loans to small water enterprises approved, representing almost half of lending goal.

Sustainability | Finance | Real Economies (“SFRE”, pronounced “Sapphire”) is a permanent investment company with an umbrella structure that invests in SFIs committed to funding real economies in the local communities they serve. SFRE’s first compartment (or sub-fund) aims to meet the growth needs of SFIs and provides Tier 1 and Tier 2 capital to SFIs globally.
